HAPPY MONTH OF SAN JUAN

Finally, a new June has turned the corner of a flirtatious May that is rushing away between house arrests and guarded departures before the curfew of every evening.

Finally, the desired June has returned, although, this time, it has nothing to do with those others that preceded it in previous years. That feeling of intimate joy that enveloped us, that oppressed our soul every time the month of San Juan opened its doors wide, this time it will not even make an appearance.

The serious health crisis that we are suffering, inadequately managed, will prevent us from celebrating this sixth month of the year as we have been doing since the distant 1970s.

Nothing will be the same this year no matter how, apparently, the situation we are immersed in changes.

These two months in which we have stayed away from reality, away from family and friends, locked within the four walls of our houses, have only served to make us more individualistic and less sociable and that usually takes its toll. The fear, that subjective fear that we feel, becomes evident every time we meet someone on the street who, in a reflex act, moves away from us as if they were plagued.

Like, in those street conversations, where we talk to each other several meters away and almost shout so that our friends can hear us.

Even in the face of the people it is perceived, hidden behind the impertinent mask that seems to pretend that we remain silent and gagged, a grimace of sadness, hopelessness and that evil is complicated to heal.

It is very possible that this year we will not be able to celebrate San Juan and, if we do, it will be very intimate, which will prevent us from going to the beaches -in fact we already know It has been forbidden, we believe that with good judgment- to sing this great symphony in greater fire as we have been doing since, in 1992, the year of the Discovery, the San Juan Bonfire Promotion Commission also “discovered” Riazor beach.

Much has been speculated about the possibility of moving the party to another time of the year and thus, celebrating the night of San Juan in August or September. Of course the sponsor of such an idea, seems to be unaware that the night of San Juan, the one of the great events, is more than burning an allegorical bonfire or making a macro-bottle on the beaches, in that in which the unworthy sectarian and miserable people of the our San Juan was converted to a tide; The night of San Juan, is celebrated on the summer solstice and brings together, around it, a series of rites, customs and traditions that are only celebrated that night. So. San Juan is only on June 24 and there is no possibility of moving it to another time of the year.

A bonfire may be burned on another date, it will even be allowed to occupy the sandy areas to celebrate a macro-bottle; However, what they can never achieve is that the night of San Juan is not that of June 23 to 24. More would be missing.

We will continue to wait to know what to expect for this month of June that begins today, despite which, in one way or another, we wish everyone a happy month of San Juan.
