HISTORICAL RECREATION OF THE COURTS OF 1520 IN THE PROGRAM OF THE HOGUERAS-20

As was already done in June 1975, the program of the HOGUERAS-20, will include a recreation of the General Courts, convened by King Carlos I in La Coruña in the spring of 1520, of which, this year, it is fulfilled The fifth centenary.

Throughout history, there are few Coruña landmarks of national resonance, even international; they are, however, transcendental enough to put our city in a preferential place. Recall, among others, the “village letter” of King Alfonso IX, the defense of the city made by María Pita on May 3, 1589, the expedition of “children of smallpox”, directed by Von Hummboldt in 1803, the “Battle of Elviña”, in 1809 …

But, without a doubt, one of the most important events, of greater resonance and national and international importance, were the GENERAL COURTS, which King Carlos I, future Emperor Carlos V, celebrated in La Coruña in the spring of 1520. In them, the solicitors representing “the Reynos de España” gave their approval to provide “the service”, that is, the money that Carlos I needed on his trip to Aachen to be crowned Emperor.

With this “historical recreation” today is intended to relive an event that happened exactly 500 years ago and transport us to the political and social problems of a recently unified Spain and the serious events that followed in the wake of these “GENERAL CORTECS” controversies.

It is, therefore, to revive, on the night of history, the old gentlemen who, coming out of their stones and their marbles, will return to the Corunna streets and we will see and hear characters, whose only evocation made tremble in that then, as Xebres, Royal Counselor, Gattinara, Grand Chanciller, the Count of Monterrey, the Count of Andrade, the Archbishop Fonseca …

It will be, therefore, a return to history and the event that led to the appointment of Carlos I, King of the Reynos of Spain ”, as“ Carlos V Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire ”, an act that would have such importance for the subsequent future history of Spain that we are still mourners of today.
