THE EXPEDITION OF BALMIS ON CORUÑESES PAGINAS

In the afternoon of today, during the second installment of the Cycle "Páginas Coruñesas" of the HOGUERAS-2017, held in the Hall of Culture of Sporting Club Casino, the historian Carlos González Guitián, offered a documentadísima conference in which he addressed The attractive theme of the "Expedition of Balmis and Isabel Cendán"; This philanthropic expedition that left the port of Corunna in 1803, directed by the doctor of the Spanish Navy Francisco Javier Balmis, served to save thousands of lives thanks to transport to our American and Pacific possessions the vaccine of the smallpox that caused so much mortality at that time.

In the expedition traveled Isabel Cendán, rector of the House of Expósitos, accompanied by several orphaned children that inoculated the saving vaccine.

Carlos González Guitián offered a documented vision of that gestation, as well as its gestation and the results obtained in the campaign.

The audience attending the event applauded the brilliant intervention of the speaker who was presented with a remembrance of his passing through the program of the HOGUERAS-2017.
